If you’ve been to Ascot Fitness, you’re more than likely to have run into Marcus White. The talented trainer is hard to miss with his vibrant personality and charm. We decided to get to know him a little better…

How did you get into the industry?

I played AFL for North Melbourne for three years. As a kid, my dad taught me a lot about fitness training so I could get above the competition. When I got to professional level, I enjoyed the hard training and I took it to new extremes with nutrition, trying to get the edge on everyone. From there, I just fell in love with it. There’s a superhuman feeling and a certain confidence you walk around with in life when you’re fit, and I want everyone to feel that.

Tell us about your time at North Melbourne.

Playing AFL is something I wanted to do my whole life and then when I got there, football became a chore and the pressure of performance and everything stopped the enjoyment of it. I realised my obsession was with how far I could push my body and I fell in love with the fitness side of it.

What’s the first thing you do in the morning?

I have a glass of water. A great start to the day.

Who has been your greatest influence?

My dad has been my greatest influence. He taught me resilience and mental strength which I now teach to my clients. It’s one of my advantages as a personal trainer, I try to empower people.

What inspires you?

The human body inspires me and how it adapts to how you treat it and I’m very in touch with that.

Favourite food?

Roast pumpkin in coconut oil.

Greatest challenge to date?

I lived in Perth for two years and I went through a tough time, mentally. I was only 21 and living by myself and I was extremely depressed. I was working night shift at the airport from 11PM to 9PM everyday for a year and played state league football on top of that. That time in my life grew me to the person I am today.

Greatest achievement to date?

Playing AFL football.

Happiest moment of your life?

Seeing my sister get married.

Something people may not know about you?

I’m a cheap drunk!

What are your hobbies outside of training?

I’m very adventurous, I want to try everything at least once. I also love to travel and am starting to develop a big interest in property investment.

How would you spend your last day on earth?

With my girlfriend eating the most tasteful meal, with the best bottle of red wine, while watching the best sunset.
